Licensing

Introduction

Overtype is a type design foundry run by Inès Davodeau & Tim Vanhille. All fonts offered on this site are original works protected under copyright law.

Nature of the Products

The fonts sold here are digital files (OTF, WOFF, WOFF2, and variable formats), distributed under license. Purchasing a font does not transfer ownership of the file, but grants a specific usage right as defined in the license.

License Ownership & Scope

Licenses are granted to the final end-user entity (company, organization, freelancer) — not to agencies, design studios, or intermediaries purchasing on behalf of their clients.

Fonts can be reused as many times as needed, as long as the usage remains within the same licensed entity.

Use in a logo or wordmark requires the dedicated "logo/wordmark use" option, available at checkout.

Resale, sublicensing, or free sharing of the font files is not permitted. However, you may share the files with trusted third-party collaborators (printers, developers, etc.) only if necessary for the licensed project. These collaborators are not allowed to reuse the files for other projects or clients.

What the License Covers (All-in-One)

All standard licenses grant you the right to use the font across multiple media and platforms, including:

• Print (books, packaging, posters, editorial, etc.)
• Digital publishing
• Websites
• Social media content
• Videos and motion design
• Mobile apps
• Software and video games
• Advertising (print and digital)

This is an all-in-one license — no need to purchase separate licenses for different media.

🔒 The only exception is logo and wordmark use, which requires a dedicated "logo license" option available at checkout.

License Sizes

Overtype licenses are priced according to the number of people working in your company or organization — not just the design team. This ensures fair pricing for individuals and small teams.

The available tiers are:

XS: Up to 3 employees
S: Up to 10 employees
M: Up to 20 employees
L: Up to 50 employees
XL: Up to 100 employees
XXL: Up to 300 employees

Over 300 employees: please contact us for a custom license.

If your company grows beyond the number of employees covered by your original license, you are required to upgrade to the corresponding tier. We trust you to be transparent — it’s how you support independent type design.

License Upgrades

You can upgrade your license at any time if your company grows or your needs evolve.

When upgrading to a higher license tier, you'll only pay the difference in price between your current license and the new one — no need to repurchase the entire license.

Example: if you previously purchased an S license and now need an M license, you'll only pay the difference between the two.

To request an upgrade, contact us with your original order information and the updated size of your company. We'll guide you through the process.

Trial fonts

Trial fonts are available upon request or via the site for testing purposes only. They are meant to help you evaluate a font’s suitability for a project — not to be used in any final or public-facing work.

Trial fonts may not be used in any published or shared work, including:

• Commercial designs
• Client presentations or deliveries
• Logos or brand identities
• Websites, apps, or products
Personal projects
Portfolios, case studies, or self-promotional material

If you wish to showcase or publish work using an Overtype font — even for non-commercial or personal use — you must purchase a proper license.

Student Licenses

If you're currently enrolled in a design or art program, you can get a free student license to use Overtype fonts in your academic work and student portfolio.

To request a student license, just send us a valid student ID or proof of enrollment to contact@overtypefoundry.com

This license is strictly limited to:

• Academic projects (school assignments, workshops, etc.)
• Your personal student portfolio (online or printed)

It does not cover freelance work, internships, or any professional use — even if unpaid.

Usage Restrictions

Overtype fonts may not be used in any context that promotes:

• Hate speech, racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, or any form of discrimination
• Political or religious propaganda, regardless of affiliation
• Violence, misinformation, or conspiracy theories

If you're unsure about a specific context, feel free to ask us.
We reserve the right to revoke any license in case of breach of these terms.
